In this study, the principles of chemical precipitation of sulfate which is
based on the formation of ettringite, a double salt with the formula Ca3Al
2O6.3CaSO(4).32H(2)O are evaluated. The Al-2(SO4)(3)-Ca(OH)(2)-H2O system i
s chosen to study the equilibrium equations for ettringite precipitation. T
he residual sulfate concentrations are below 200 mg/l in pH values above 10
,5 indicating that ettringite precipitation can be employed as an alternati
ve treatment process for the removal of sulfate ions.
