Abstract
This work presents the application of a scaler finite element formulation f or E-x (TE-like) modes in anisotropic planar and channel waveguides with di agonal permittivity tensor, diffused in both transversal directions, This e xtended formulation considers explicitly both the variations of the refract ive index and their spatial derivates inside of each finite element. Disper sion curves for Er modes in planar and channel waveguides are shown, and th e results compared with solutions obtained by other formulations.
