The removal of coliforms and pathogenic organisms from effluents of oxidati
on lagoons with Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) was demonstrated and
nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon and plumb were eliminated The removal of Giard
ia cysts, SST and BOD from polish effluents was measured. Analysis accordin
g to standard methods, were made in collected samples. Giardia cyst concent
rations in water samples from effluents with water hyacinth were significan
tly (p<0.05) less than from samples treated without hyacinths. There was no
removal of the SST and BOD during study, The oxidation lagoons were effici
ent for Giardia sp, cysts removal.
