Dm. Sonechkin et Hb. Wu, Multiscale interrelations between air temperature in southeast China and El Nino: Wavelet analysis, IAN FIZ ATM, 35(2), 1999, pp. 250-258
Multiscale manifestations of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation in the dynami
cs of air temperature in various regions of the earth were examined, using
southeast China as an example. The wavelet transforms of surface air temper
ature time series observed in Guangzhou (southeast China) and sea surface t
emperature time series observed in the Nine 1 + 2 and Nino 3 regions were a
nalyzed. An intense interdecadal oscillation was revealed in these time ser
ies. The subsequent correlation of the transformed series separately for ea
ch time scale, which is a new technique designed to analyze interrelations
of nonstationary stochastic processes, showed that the interrelations betwe
en these series are complex in character. This manifests itself in positive
and negative correlations between the series on interannual and interdecad
al scales, respectively. Since the interdecadal variability is determined.
by a sequence of extremely intense El Nino events, it follows that the resp
onse of the Guangzhou temperature to intense El Nino is other than that to
routine El Nino.
