Abstract
Significant differences were found at the synaptophysin (Syp I) locus betwe en two groups of Icelandic cod Gadus morhua; Loftstaoahraun (spawning groun d), Reykjanesgrunn and Eyrabakkabugur (feeding grounds) on the one hand and Kantur (spawning ground) and Austfjardadjup (feeding ground) on the other. There was also a considerable genetic heterogeneity within the former grou p. The results indicate that the cod in south and south-east Icelandic wate rs do not belong to one panmictic population.
