Mm. Sorribes et al., Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated mucocutaneous allergic vasculitis with oral manifestations caused by propylthiouracil, J LARYNG OT, 113(5), 1999, pp. 477-479
A 49-year-old woman treated with increasing dosage of propylthiouracil (PTU
) in order to control hyperthyroidism, developed progressive necrotic ulcer
s in the oral cavity, oropharynx and rhinopharynx and vasculitic ulcers on
both auricular pinnae after a few days. The PTU treatment was immediately d
iscontinued and the mucosal and skin manifestations resolved promptly. Labo
ratory findings, including anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), s
uggested allergic vasculitis. This is to din knowledge the first reported c
ase of oral manifestations of PTU-induced allergic vasculitis.
