BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis in a patient with Wegeneris disease raises the pr
oblem of amphotericin toxicity further compromizing the pre-existing renal
disorder.
CASE REPORT: An anemic patient treated for Wegeneris disease developed visc
eral leishmaniasis. This renal failure patient was treated with lipid compl
ex amphetericin B and liposomal amphetericin B. We report outcome at 10 mon
ths follow-up.
DISCUSSION: The new formulations of amphetericin B allow effective treatmen
t of visceral leishmaniasis in renal failure patients. Long-lasting results
are probably favored by the interruption of immuno-suppressive therapy.
