Arthur Applebee gave the following talk upon receiving the 1998 David H. Ru
ssell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English from the
National Council of Teachers of English. He used the occasion to look back
on move than thirty years of his own work. In so doing, he traces the recen
t history of the field as: a whole, exploring the development of the powerf
ul theories that inform our field, the research and practice that grew out
of them, and the challenges that remain.
