Graphite has been used as the anode far a lithium ion battery. It shows hig
h reversible Lithium intercalate capacity and a flat voltage output near ze
ro volts (vs. Li). However, there are some problems, such as slow lithium i
on diffusion rate and poor compatibility with electrolyte solutions. In thi
s work, a coke/graphite composite with core-shell structure has been manufa
ctured. The disordered coke shell will protect the graphite core from exfol
iation and improve the diffusion rate of lithium ions into the composite pa
rticles. This core/shell composite carbon anode shows high capacity, excell
ent kinetics and good compatibility with electrolyte solutions in compariso
n with naked graphite anode. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights rese
