In the title compounds, C16H12O3 and C17H16O3, the six-membered ring of the norbornene moiety adopts a boat conformation and the five-membered rings f ormed by the methylene bridge adopt envelope conformations; the other rings in the molecules are nearly coplanar. In the solid state, both compounds e xhibit O--H...O and C-H...O hydrogen bonds.
