Ag+-pyridine complex has been generated in the gas phase. Dissociative meta
l-to-ligand charge transfer was observed through the photodissociation tech
nique. Two continuum absorption/dissociation bands were recorded by monitor
ing the pyridine cation fragments as a function of the laser wavelengths an
d the possible dissociative mechanisms are discussed. The binding energy of
the Ag+-pyridine was determined to be 45 kcal/mol. Ag+ bonding to nitrogen
atom in C5H5N with ion-dipole interactions is suggested. (C) 1999 Elsevier
