P. Kolsky, Engineers and urban malaria: part of the solution, or part of the problem?(Reprinted from Waterlines), ENVIR URBAN, 11(1), 1999, pp. 159-163
This paper describes the very serious health and other problems caused by d
ifferent kinds of mosquito in urban areas of India, and how addressing dise
ases such as malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever requires controlling th
eir breeding sites. It then describes how engineers rarely consider their r
ole in mosquito control and how a series of workshops for engineers made cl
ear this role - especially in the management of construction sites which of
ten serve as major breeding areas.
