Abstract
The kinetic method was used to determine the proton affinities (PA) of some homologous alkyl nitriles, C-1 - C-8, and new PA values for five nitriles were derived. Both metastable ion (MI) and collision-induced dissociations (CID) of the proton-bound diners were studied. The PA values derived depend ed on whether MI or CID results were used. The effect of different target g ases was investigated and was found to be small. Weaknesses in the kinetic method are discussed.
