Fa. Armstrong et Rjp. Williams, Thermodynamic influences on the fidelity of iron-sulphur cluster formationin proteins, FEBS LETTER, 451(2), 1999, pp. 91-94
In an organism, two thermodynamic factors are important in ensuring that ho
mometallic [4Fe-4S] cubane clusters are formed in preference to clusters co
ntaining heterometals such as Zn or Cu. These are the electronic resonance
stabilisation, which boosts the binding of Fe(II) within an Fe-S cluster re
lative to its normally low position in the Irving-Williams order, and atten
uation of the cytoplasmic concentrations of competing metals such as Zn or
Cu by specific ligands. (C) 1999 Federation of European Biochemical Societi
