From analyses of strengths and weaknesses of the apprenticeship of radiolog
y in France, of existing pedagogic methods, of time constraints within clin
ical settings and of scientific theories of teaching and learning, the auth
ors define objectives that teaching should target and propose a new method
of instruction problem and practise-based. The method appears applicable in
French radiology departments. It should forster early acquisition by resid
ents of professional attitudes and way of thinking, and make them active se
lf-directed learners.
