Abstract
We give a direct proof of a theorem of Katz on linearly rigid tuples in GL( n) (C), showing that it holds for any field K in place of C. As an applicat ion, we realize the groups PSp(n)(p), p > 3 a prime not equivalent to +/- 1 mod 24, as Galois group over the rationals.
