Jm. Rao et al., A comparative study of bulk and supported chromia catalysts for the fluorination of trichloroethylene, J CATALYSIS, 184(1), 1999, pp. 105-111
The photoelectron spectroscopy of Cr2O3 and impregnated Cr2O3/Al2O3 catalys
ts was studied before and after treatment with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride
(AHF) and after reaction of trichloroethene (TRI) with AHF. XPS results ind
icate formation of both hydroxyfluorides and fluorides of Cr and Al. The bi
nding energy values of the Cr2p(3/2) levels of oxides, and also of fluorina
ted species, were found to be different in bulk and supported catalysts. Th
e fluorinated catalysts from Cr2O3 and impregnated and coprecipitated Cr2O3
/Al2O3 exhibit the same order of activity in the fluorination of TRI in ter
ms of conversion and selectivity to 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane but they
differ in life span. Bulk Cr2O3 exhibits a longer life span. (C) 1999 Acad
