Structural, electric and magnetic measurements have been performed on the n
ew rare earth intermetallic compound Gd2Ni2Cd. It crystallises in the Mn2B2
Al-type structure (space group Cmmm) and undergoes an antiferromagnetic tra
nsition at 65 K. Above 70 K the compound follows the Curie-Weiss law with m
u = 8.03 mu(B), and theta = + 22 K. The transition is confirmed by magnetor
esistance data at 5 K in applied fields up to 9 T. Magnetization measuremen
ts at 5 K up to 5.5 T give evidence of a spin flop transition at 1.5T. (C)
