Polycondensation of 6-fluorine-containing group substituted 1,3,5-triazine-
2,4-dithiols with dibromododecane or fluorinated diiodoalkanes has been inv
estigated to determine optimal conditions including reaction temperature, t
ime, and accelerators, giving poly(2,4-bisthio substituted 6-fluorine-conta
ining group substituted 1,3,5-triazine)s. The inherent viscosity and molecu
lar weight were influenced by the fluorine-containing branches in 6-substit
uted 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiols and the kind of the dihalide compounds. Po
ly(2,4-bisthio substituted 6-fluorine-containing group substituted 1,3,5-tr
iazine)s swelled in toluene and octane, but were soluble in tetrahydrofuran
and chloroform. The fluorine-containing branches in 6-substituted 1,3,5-tr
iazine-2,4-dithiols and the kind of the dihalide compounds had a significan
t effect on the contact angles and surface free energies of the fluorine-co
ntaining polymers. Flexible fluorine-containing branches gave high contact
angles for water and CH2I2 and low surface free energies. fluorine-containi
ng polymers had grass transition temperatures of 5 similar to 85 degrees C
and melting points of 79 similar to 120 degrees C. It is concluded that the
presented fluorine-containing polymers have characteristics of fluorinated
polymers and good processing properties.
