We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variable S
193. The emission lines are remarkably similar to those of V795 Her and exh
ibit high-velocity S-waves and complex absorptions that are modulated with
the orbital period. Evidence for transient anomalous spectral features is s
een during the first two nights of our run. We propose that S193 and V795 H
er are non-eclipsing SW Sex stars. Finally, we show that the 'disc overflow
' model fails to explain the Balmer line orbital behaviour in these low-inc
lination systems.
