Abstract
In February 1998, the Seven-digit Postal Code System was started in Japan. To cope with this system, a new mail processing system has been developed t o treat overall mail delivery operations including dispatch sorting, delive ry sorting and carrier sequencing.One of the features of this overall proce ssing system Is application of the newly developed Bar code system. In Japa n, to avoid adding the limit to address area on a mail piece and to avoid a dding prominent symbols on a mail piece as much as possible, the bar code s ystem by invisible fluorescent ink is being adopted. In this paper, a summa ry of the bar code, bar code image capturing and recognition method will be introduced.
