Abstract
The changes in the chemical structure of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) ind uced by electron beam irradiation in vacuum and in ammonia gas atmosphere h ave been investigated by means of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectro scopy. Double bonds and trifluoromethyl branches are formed by irradiation in vacuum. The CF3 branching is enhanced distinctly by irradiation at eleva ted temperature above the melting point of PTFE. After irradiation in ammon ia gas atmosphere ammonium fluoride salt was detected in the irradiated flu oropolymers. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
