We experimentally demonstrate the generation of amplitude-squeezed light in
the normal-dispersion regime and measure by direct detection 1.7 +/- 0.1 d
B (33%) and, with correction for linear losses, 2.5 +/- 0.2 dB (47%) of noi
se reduction below the shot-noise level. The dependence of the noise behavi
or on dispersion is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. (C)
