Equations describing slow-neutron interaction with static nuclei have been
derived with allowance for multiple-scattering effects. It has been shown t
hat the form of this potential depends crucially on the relationship betwee
n the neutron wavelength and the characteristic distance between nuclei. In
the case of ultracold neutrons, the potential is determined by the scatter
ing length rather than by the amplitude for neutron scattering on an indivi
dual nucleus.
