The use of supercritical fluids as media for the formation of powdered mate
rials is a recent development. After a brief presentation of supercritical
fluid properties and fundamentals of crystallization, this paper describes
two routes to particle formation: the rapid expansion of supercritical solu
tions and the supercritical antisolvent. Advantages that fluids may offer a
re discussed through comparison with equivalent conventional processes. (C)
