Abstract
It is shown that it is possible to separate the equation of the density of peaks of a random surface profile into the density of dependent peaks and t he density of independent peaks. As these two types of peaks behave differe ntly under load the ability to separate them has to be important in contact theory. Practical results are shown that verify the theory.
