Hydrocarbon formation by reactions of graphite with water-containing minerals under high pressure and high temperature

Study on hydrocarbon formation by reaction of graphite, serpentine and oliv ine and reaction of graphite and biotite was carried out under high pressur e and high temperature using a diamond anvil cell apparatus. Gas chromatogr aphic analysis results indicate that both reactions generate methane-domina ted hydrocarbon, which means these reactions are likely significant ways of abiogenetic hydrocarbon formation in the deep earth.
