Ws. Xiao et al., Hydrocarbon formation by reactions of graphite with water-containing minerals under high pressure and high temperature, PROG NAT SC, 9(5), 1999, pp. 395-398
Study on hydrocarbon formation by reaction of graphite, serpentine and oliv
ine and reaction of graphite and biotite was carried out under high pressur
e and high temperature using a diamond anvil cell apparatus. Gas chromatogr
aphic analysis results indicate that both reactions generate methane-domina
ted hydrocarbon, which means these reactions are likely significant ways of
abiogenetic hydrocarbon formation in the deep earth.
