In 1995, the Quebec Forest Industries Association joined other industries a
nd the BNQ to prepare standards for the use of alkaline residues as agricul
tural lime substitutes. This new commercial standard was adopted in late su
mmer of 1997 and includes alkaline residues from kraft pulp mills (lime mud
, green liquor dregs, slaker grits) plus wood ashes. The standard provides
performance requirements for the products as agricultural lime and also inc
ludes quality requirements for metals and specific organic contaminants. Th
ese requirements are very protective of the environment and allow transform
ation of regulated wastes into commercial products.
