Carbon-carbon composites (CCC) are a unique class of high performance mater
ials. Since their inception, about 1960, over 100 different types of CCCs h
ave been created with properties previously not available. Novel materials
were designed, fabricated, tested, upgraded and used in selected prototype
applications. Componentry benefits were demonstrated and later the material
s a were used in operational systems. This review focuses on the applied us
es of CCC materials h the fields of friction, aerospace, propulsion, power
generation, thermal management, industry, and medicine.
