Abstract
Traditional methods of hair removal have proven unsatisfactory for many ind ividuals with excessive or unwanted hair. In the last few years, several la sers and xenon flashlamps have been developed that promise to fulfill the n eed for a practical, sate, and long-lasting method of hair removal. Aggress ive marketing of these has contributed to their popularity among patients a nd physicians. However, significant controversy and confusion surrounds thi s held. This article provides a detailed explanation of the scientific unde rpinnings for optical hair removal and explores the advantages and disadvan tages of the various devices currently available (Nd:YAG, ruby, alexandrite , diode losers, and xenon flashlamp). Treatment and safety guidelines are p rovided to assist the practitioner in the use of these devices. Although th e field of optical hair removal is still in its infancy, initial reports of long-term efficacy are encouraging. Copyright (C) 1999 by W.B. Saunders Co mpany.
