This paper reports the fluorescence properties of a new series of (La, Zn)
OF:Sm3+ powder phosphors. The measured fluorescence spectra were analyzed b
y computing the color coordinates ((X) over bar, (Y) over bar) and relative
fluorescence intensity ratios (ED/ MD). A bright yellowish-orange color wa
s observed from these powder phosphors under a UV-source due to the confirm
ation of the transitions (4)G(5/2) --> H-6(5/2), (4)G(5/2) --> H-6(7/2), an
d (4)G(5/2) --> H-6(9/2). Scanning electron microscopic studies were perfor
med to understand the average grain size of the synthesized powder phosphor
