Abstract
The coupled-mode equations that describe the switching dynamics of opt ical pulses in two parallel waveguides are derived. These equations di ffer from the conventional ones in having extra coupling terms that ar ise from the dispersion properties of the coupling coefficient. It is shown that the coupling-coefficient dispersion can cause pulse distort ion or even pulse breakup and in general produces much more significan t effects than the group-velocity dispersion.
