This paper presents the results of a research program conducted to design t
he all-weld metal deposited with AWS A5.5-81(1) E10018M(2), E11018M(2) and
E12018M(2) SMAW-type electrodes. The role that different alloying elements
such as manganese, carbon and chromium play on the tensile properties, hard
ness and toughness as well as on the microstructure was studied. Criteria f
or selecting the weld metal composition leading to optimum combination of t
ensile strength and toughness are suggested. The effect of the variation of
heat input, within the requirements of the AWS standard, on the mentioned
properties was also analyzed. It was found that the E11018M and E12018M all
-weld-metal tensile properties are very sensitive to variations in heat inp
ut. For certain values of chemical composition, welding parameter ranges su
itable to guarantee the fulfillment of AWS requirements were determined.
