A detailed examination of the aging response in a quenched U-0.77 wt% Ti al
loy using transmission electron microscopy is presented. The acicular marte
nsite in this alloy is supersaturated with Ti after quenching, and decompos
es via coherent precipitation of U2Ti which grows as rods parallel to [100]
(alpha), followed by coarsening via a cellular discontinuous mechanism. The
alpha/U2Ti orientation relationship for both the continuous and discontinu
ous precipitates may be described as:
(001)(U2Ti)\\(100)(alpha)
(01 (1) over bar 0)(U2Ti)\\(010)(alpha)
(2<(11)over bar>0)(U2Ti)\\(001)(alpha) (C) 1999 Acta Metallugica Inc. Publi
