Abstract
Stress corrosion cracking tests, under biaxial loading, of 316L austenitic stainless steel in a boiling MgCl2 (448) solution at 154 degrees C, show th at the multiaxial stress cracking criterion is different from the uniaxial criterion. The crack initiates at etch pits and does not necessarily grow p erpendicular to the direction of the maximum principal stress.
