An equivalent particle size distribution function n(tau) is applied to desc
ribe optical scattering property of tissue. Under the Fraunhofer diffractio
n approximation, both the scattering coefficient mu(s) and the scattering p
hase function S(theta) are educible from n(tau). Moreover, such a scheme pr
ovides a new feasible method based on the light scattering techniques for p
article size analysis to measure the optical properties of tissue. Experime
ntal results of the whole human blood and a thin porcine muscle sample are
also provided and so is a calculation resulting from an optical phantom of
tissue. The light scattering equivalency between the practical tissue and t
he corresponding equivalent particles has been verified.
