Bladder tumors in dogs and cats provide a diagnostic and therapeutic challe
nge to veterinary clinicians. Because disease is often advanced by the time
many dogs and cats with bladder tumors are presented for treatment and bec
ause many such tumors occur at the trigone region of the bladder, therapeut
ic outcome is poor in many cases. Surgery is ineffective for tumors located
in the trigone, and radiation therapy is associated with high morbidity; t
hus, chemotherapy remains the most common form of treatment for dogs and ca
ts with bladder tumors. This article discusses techniques used to diagnose
urinary bladder neoplasia and reviews the current status of chemotherapeuti
c drugs used to treat bladder cancer.
