Chemiluminescence has been observed in the reduction of perchloric aqu
eous solutions of XeO3 with Eu2+ ions. Fast (several seconds) consumpt
ion of Eu-II occurs when the ratio of the initial concentrations of th
e reactants [Eu2+](0) : [XeO3](0) < 6; however, the chemiluminescence
remains sufficiently bright and prolonged (up to -10 min after nearly
complete oxidation of Eu-II to Eu-III). The assumption was made that i
ntermediates in the reduction of XeO3 participate in the chemiluminesc
ent stages of the process.
