Abstract
Dimethylsulfoxonium methylide in DMSO initiates unusual oxidative skel etal transformations of trichlorocyclopentenone. Lactone, cyclic ortho ester, and a number of by-products of hydrolysis, substitution, and re duction were isolated and characterized. The expected epoxide was obta ined in low yield.
