R. Mukundan et al., Ceria-electrolyte-based mixed potential sensors for the detection of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, EL SOLID ST, 2(8), 1999, pp. 412-414
Mixed potential sensors based on zirconia electrolytes have been extensivel
y investigated for the detection of CO and hydrocarbons in oxygen-containin
g streams. In this paper, the response of a Pt/Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9/Au sensor ope
rating at 600 degrees C is reported for the first time and is compared to t
hat of a Pt/stabilized zirconia (yttria-stabilized, YSZ)/Au sensor. The res
ponse of the ceria-electrolyte sensor was more stable and reproducible than
that of the zirconia-electrolyte sensor. This difference in response has b
een attributed to an improvement in the oxygen reduction kinetics of the go
ld electrode on the ceria electrolyte. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society
