Objective: Hemangiopericytoma is a rare neoplasm originating from the Zimme
rmann pericytes along capillaries and venules. We describe a patient with a
malignant hemangiopericytoma of the uterus.
Case report: A 25-year-old patient was referred for what was thought to be
a fast growing uterine leiomyoma and anemia. Frozen section histology was i
nconclusive. The definitive diagnosis required immunohistochemical studies.
The tumor was debulked. The patient received one course of combination che
motherapy but died of rapidly progressive disease 14 weeks after the diagno
sis.
Conclusion: Malignant hemangiopericytoma should be considered in the differ
ential diagnosis of patients with rapidly growing uterine tumors.
