Abstract
Small mixed 4d and 5d clusters on Ag(0 0 1) are investigated by means of th e KKR Green's function method. It is shown that the mixture of pure transit ion metal clusters with substrate atoms or the creation of defects in the c luster leads to an unexpected enhancement of the magnetic moments. The resu lts are discussed in the framework of a tight binding model. (C) 1999 Elsev ier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
