Organizers' intention: Materials research in fusion has extensively utilize
d the outcomes of fission and non-nuclear technologies. The opposite was no
t always true in the past years. Some of the knowledge and methodologies ev
olved in fusion, however, are now mature and can be spun off to more generi
c applications. Sharing of various common issues that may exist among the c
urrent technologies and fusion is expected to yield fruitful interactions a
nd effective solutions. Typical of those are: enhancing accuracy in predict
ing neutron damage and various types of environment-assisted cracking, bett
er ways of joining materials and detecting/preventing structural flaws and
failure. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
