Electrochemical behaviour of 2-amino-4,6-dimethyl-5-[4'-sulphonamoyl]azopyr
imidines has been studied at DME and GC electrodes by employing techniques
such as d.c. polarography, cyclic voltammetry and coulometry in Britton-Rob
inson buffers (pH 2.8-11.5). The reduction gives one well-defined, irrevers
ible and diffusion-controlled, 2-electron wave/peak corresponding to the re
duction of -N=N- to -NH-NH-. The product obtained by constant current elect
rolysis has been analysed and plausible mechanism for the reduction process
is suggested. Effect of solvent composition has also been studied.
