The results of the nitrate reduction kinetics of laterite and alluvial soil
s of West Bengal, under different treatments reveal that the NO3-N content
in both the soils decreases with the time of submergence and follows an exp
onential pattern indicating first order of reaction kinetics irrespective o
f treatments. Also there is complete disappearance of NO3-N in both the soi
ls due to starch application at the end of 14 days of: submergence, The rat
e of NO3-N reduction is much higher in two soils treated with starch or nit
rogen (KNO3 or Drilled urea) than that of the untreated soils resulting fro
m the higher values of the velocity constants and shortening of half-life p
eriod as well as changes in pH and E-h in the treated soils.
