Abstract
The presented control scheme utilizes adaptive fuzzy logic to track a refer ence engine rotational speed during engine idling. The idle speed system is described and the non-linearity of the system and the presence of a variab le time delay highlighted. To evaluate the performance of the controller a model of the system is developed and simulation results presented. Engine t est results are also presented and compared with simulation results. It is shown that the Wang adaptive fuzzy logic algorithm is incapable of controll ing systems with large time delays. This problem is solved in simulation us ing the Wang adaptive fuzzy logic algorithm in conjunction with the Smith p rediction.
