An extensive review of current research on supported metal membranes, espec
ially for hydrogen separation is presented. Membrane material, methods for
fabrication of thin metal layers on porous substrate and gas transport mech
anisms through different types of membranes are summarized followed by a di
scussion of problems with supported metal membranes. Further developments i
n this research field are expected to the application for membrane reactor
system as one of the environmentally-friendly chemical processes.
