We separate the electronic and nuclear contributions to the third-order non
linear optical susceptibilities chi(ijki)((3)) using degenerate four wave m
ixing. This method allows to know the physical origin of the optical nonlin
earities of new soluble tetrathiafulvalene derivatives and deduce the value
s of the second-order hyperpolarisabilities gamma. The values of gamma for
the studied compounds are about 10(5) greater than for CS2.
