As a protection measure against scour and undermining, sheet piles are
provided at the upstream and the downstream ends of a weir. One or tw
o rows of intermediate sheet piles are also provided to reduce the upl
ift pressures on the downstream floor. Due to the complexities of anal
ysis, it is not known whether the provision of intermediate sheet pile
s is economical. This paper investigates the effectivity of multiple s
heet piles as a means of reducing the floor thickness and, eventually,
the cost.
