Ap. Saveliev et Vn. Karnaukhov, A rhythmic pattern of zone formation of Streptomyces colonies and the state of the near-Earth space, BIOFIZIKA, 44(2), 1999, pp. 318-324
The effect of heliogeophysical factors on the periodicity of formation of c
oncentric rings of sporogenous air mycelium on the surface of radiant strep
tomycete colonies was studied. The process proceeds as several successive w
aves of zone formation. Environmental changes were recorded on the surface
of Streptomyces levoris colonies as variations of the zone-forming rhythm,
just as in age-related structures of higher animals and plants. The frequen
ce of zone formation was shown to vary regularly with the time of inoculati
on, season, and as a result of rapid transmeridional movements. The role df
the growing apical membrane and the branching of the substrate mycelium hy
phae in recording of environmental changes is discussed.
